    Volvo S60 T6 R-Design Polestar | Car Reviews | Auto

I got the keys to the Volvo S60 R-Design the same afternoon I read an article listing Volvo as one of the brands most likely to disappear from the U. The text was mostly speculation based on creative number crunching, but it nevertheless cast a slight pall on a car that was beginning to feel old when I last drove it -- six months ago.

EuCD, the platform hiding beneath the S60's relatively crisp sheetmetal, is around seven years old now, and it just doesn't have the refinement we've come to expect in Volvo's primarily German and Japanese competitors. Particularly ahead of the firewall the S60 telegraphs road harshness into the cabin and retains a very front-wheel drive feel despite our tester's AWD layout -- I actually had to consult the Monroney in the glovebox to see if I was driving a FWD or AWD model.

Once properly aimed on a smooth stretch of asphalt, though, the turbo straight-six situated sideways beneath the hood likely another reason for the car's front bias stretches out and sings. I'll love an I6 until I die, and the powerful, flexible Volvo 3. Braking is a mixed bag: On the other, our road test editor reported rapid fade in on-track situations, cooking them entirely after just two road-course laps.

So who does that leave to visit the Volvo showroom besides brand die-hards and jilted Saab customers? The redesigned S60 is reportedly on-sale now, so stay tuned for a full review of the updated vehicle soon. A night in this Volvo S60 R-Design brought back good memories of our long-term example we had a couple of years back. Andy rightfully points out that the S60 is a harsher riding specimen in the class and there are no run-flat tires on this car to point the finger at and blame like on a BMW.

Maybe it is the older bones that underpin the car or maybe that's the way Volvo engineers tuned the suspension, but it's a ride quality that I don't mind and I think a lot of people could very well live with on a daily basis. It's not overly harsh and there is sufficient give in the suspension to take the edge off of bigger bumps. Steering is lightly weighted with snappy response. When pushing the car hard you can feel some front end chatter through the steering wheel.

As with most all-wheel drive vehicles, it's got the tendency to understeer, but there's still a healthy amount of grip available here. And, yes, the brakes will fade quickly on track; however, on the street they're fine and easily get the S60 slowed down. The highlight of this S60 remains the straight six-cylinder with its smooth operation throughout the rev range and good low-end torque. You'll have no problem easily merging onto expressways or pulling of passes. Bolted to it is a six-speed automatic, which is the only gearbox available.

The lack of an available manual is something that's easy for car writers to harp on, but the majority of consumers want automatics. The interior remains typical Volvo with the floating waterfall center stack that has some really small buttons for the audio system. The front bucket seats remain some of the best in the business with the perfect amount of side bolster and support in all the right the places. While much of its competition is newer and packs more features than the Volvo, I'd argue the S60 still has its own charm to it and I will continue to recommend it to people who are trying to break out of the 3-series, A4 and C-class mold.

It's a relatively fun car to drive, features clean looks and carries Volvo's sterling safety reputation. This article has been updated to reflect a change in the Volvo platform quoted earlier.
