  • Porsche Cayenne GTS review. This Cayenne GTS is the second generation of the more driver-focused of Porsche’s two go-faster SUVs. Unlike the Cayenne Turbo (which has two puffers attached to its V8), the GTS uses a normally aspirated, but highly tuned, V8.

    Should I not assess the car simply for what it is, rather than what it purports to be? This uses hydraulic swivel motors which, using the steering angle and lateral acceleration as a guide, twist one end of the anti-roll bar in relation to the other, quelling body lean. Study the photos carefully, and you'll recognize the hood, front fascia, head and taillamps borrowed from the Turbo, although the big air inlets that cool that model's intercoolers are blocked off. Not only did it win its class almost everywhere it went, it also won the fabled Targa Florio outright. I confess when they first came out I hated them, and Porsche for becoming a hypermarket instead of remaining a special boutique.

    Once there was no acronym more exclusive in the Porsche glossary. Not only did it win its class almost everywhere it went, it also won the fabled Targa Florio outright. Then, four years ago, Porsche dug the name out again for a very special version of the now-discontunued generation Launched with two seats, special suspension and a sizeable power hike, it was fabulously and rightly well received. Too well for those who hoped the GTS nameplate would retain its exclusivity.

For this generation GTS, Porsche has raised the power of the 3. The wider body from the Carrera 4 is used regardless of whether you choose two- or four-wheel drive, while the suspension has a bespoke tune too. Visually, you can tell the GTS from lesser s by its black wheels, headlight surrounds and exhausts, centre-lock 20in wheels and a new front bumper.

    Inside, there are GTS logos on the standard sports seats, kick plates and the instruments. It is a peculiar but rarely broken law of the world that less is almost invariably more. And so it proved. GTS versions of both the Boxster and Cayman are so much greater than the sum of the changes to which Porsche admits, I suspected the company was for some strategic reason actually understating the extent of their modifications.

    This GTS is no different. Every time I thought it must run out of grip it found more, every unexpected change in camber or surface it took in its stride. When this generation of came out, some criticised it for the lack of feel of its electric steering system, but no one could credibly make the same claim of the GTS. And for fans of traditional manual gearboxes, the standard seven-speeder has been entirely reworked, resulting in swifter, smoother and sharper shifts.

    So enthused was I by this unexpected turn of events, I elected to return to base in a GTS from as far across the spectrum as I could find: The Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet to use its proper name is perfectly good, but it fails to live up to both its billing and its badge. The interior features a GTS logo on the centrally-mounted rev counter. That feeling of being at one with the machine is missing; after the scintillating coupe I felt more like its operator than its driver.

    Only when I came down out of the mountains and was cruising on the freeway, roof down, Californian sunshine lightly browning my bonce did the car feel in its preferred environment. Am I banging on too much about the badge? Should I not assess the car simply for what it is, rather than what it purports to be?

    By contrast, the back-to-basics coupe is exactly as described. It is, in fact, just right. Four stars for the range, but in this most basic form, the GTS is as good to drive as you could conceive a to be without making it any more difficult to live with. Mid-engined two-seater that combines stunning performance and build quality with almost foolproof handling.
