Those are the kind of gems that make a review something to savor and remember. Michael Karesh operates truedelta. Few reimburse incidental costs like motel rooms if you have to wait for repairs. This is great if you are in an F1 race, not so great if you actually enjoy the skills aspect of driving. Thanks for replying Michael.

I had fallen hard and wanted one -- badly. So I did what every automotive enthusiast has done since the dawn of time: I bought the closest thing to it I could afford. In this case, I channeled my inner Evo through a car that was actually fairly close to the real deal, a shiny black Mitsubishi GT VR4. Both cars have high-output turbocharged engines and all-wheel drive, both were capable of covering vast distances with great pace, and both wound up reserving their own little spot in my heart.

It would be six years and an exorbitant amount of money in repairs later before I finally found my way behind the wheel of a true Evo -- Motor Trend 's long-term test Evolution MR -- and it left an indelible impression.

Unfortunately, it also left an impression on my spine, but oh, was it worth it. Every Evo I've driven since has left a grin on my face for days afterward. The Octane Blue Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution model we recently had in for some test-driving action is no different.

Although not a Darwinian leap from the previous iteration, the tenth version of Mitsubishi 's sports car superstar is worlds more refined compared to the raw Evo XIV long-termer I drove three years ago. For the model year, Mitsubishi made some minor interior refinements in the form of padded door panels and gloss-black instrument panel trim, as well as Mitsubishi's FUSE hands-free Bluetooth system, which includes connectivity with Bluetooth audio devices.

Unfortunately, the touring package also includes a much more subtle rear-deck lip spoiler, replacing the larger and I think better-looking unit found on the normal model. Need I remind you that this is an Evo, and Evos have big spoilers? Not missing from our tester was the same 2. In today's world of high-output turbochargers and direct injection, those figures aren't exactly class-leading. And while power isn't everything, if Mitsubishi were to bump up the horsepower and torque, it might get people talking about it again.

With Hyundai putting down hp in the new Genesis Coupe, Mitsu has its work cut out for it. What Mitsubishi does have down is the way the Evo gets around a corner. At moderate speeds, it grips harder than a gob of Super glue. Keep your foot in it and when the sticky Yokohama Advan rubber lets go, you're met with predictable understeer.

But disable stability control, push forward and hold the SST dual-clutch transmission mode selector until it reads S-Sport in the small LCD screen in the center of the simple but elegant gauge cluster, and hurl it into the corner with as much speed as you dare, and you're met with the most stable drift you can hold until the apex.

I would bet my left, er, you know, that it's almost impossible not to have the biggest, ah, feces-eating grin stretched across your now-elongated face. Get the Evo out onto the dirt and the fun is elevated to a whole new level. After a morning classroom session detailing lots of pertinent information stay tuned for my upcoming blog post about my experience , we headed out to a cone-filled dirt lot with rally cross hot shoe Bill Martin for some behind-the-wheel instruction.

It's quickly evident the Evo was made to master this type of off-road exuberance. Turn in and give it some throttle, and the tail end slides out as you effortlessly drift through the beginning of the dirt figure eight. Once you hit your exit point, a slight lift and redirection of the wheel transfers the weight to the opposite side and you're suddenly back sliding sideways through to the other side.
