Power from that 5. It doesn't match the cachet of a Mercedes-Benz or BMW yet , but the Genesis has evolved into a more competent competitor -- for those willing to step into a Hyundai dealership. Equipment included a speed-sensitive rack-and-pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes , multi-link front and 5-link rear suspension; and three engine choices, depending on market: The name Genesis reflects Hyundai's first entry into the luxury market segment. Hyundai Genesis V-8 First Test - Motor Trend

The second-generation Hyundai Genesis luxury sedan is no mere refresh, and we'll be surprised if the car doesn't continue to slowly nibble away at luxury best-seller sales. Some buyers are happy to pay extra for real leather, heated front seats, and a rearview camera, but when the emotional pull of a respected luxury badge isn't enough to make a sale, the Hyundai Genesis is ready to catch the fallout. With the Genesis, Hyundai has designed a sedan that looks a few inches longer than its predecessor, yet has been stretched just two-tenths of an inch.

The Genesis makes the most of that 0. We're not sold on that giant grille, but it's clear Hyundai isn't trying to hide this car's identity anymore. A winged Genesis badge graces the top of the front grille, the center of the wheels, and the steering wheel, unlike with the last-gen sedan.

Even the power-folding sideview mirrors get in on the act -- every Hyundai Genesis has approach lamps that project the Genesis logo onto the ground near the front doors. We've seen this technology before on everything from the Ford Mustang to Jaguars and Land Rovers, but that doesn't take away from its gee-whiz appeal. Still, the Genesis is more than just a collection of features -- it rides on a wheelbase that's 2. The Hyundai also offers something you still won't find on any Acura or Lincoln: To be fair, most buyers will likely stick with the Genesis' V-6, but simply making that powerplant available speaks to the automaker's aspirations for this luxury sedan.

Power from that 5. The Genesis V-8 now produces lb-ft at rpm, up from the model's lb-ft at rpm. The Genesis V-8 is happy to sip regular fuel instead of premium, but then it only makes hp and lb-ft. Interested in the Hyundai Genesis sedan? It sounds like a lot of power, but the rear-driver is also a lot of car.

The new Genesis is a more substantial car, and the weight has a predictable effect at the track. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph comes in 5. That makes the Genesis V-8 a midpack performer, depending on what you think its competitors are. Among price-competitive offerings, an all-wheel-drive Audi A6 with a supercharged V-6 engine sprinted from mph in 4. Passing power from mph is ample in the Genesis V-8, with a 2.

Most of those cars lack the Genesis' interior space. Without breaking the bank, there's plenty of space for four and a V-8 that's easy to enjoy in the real world. Slam the throttle and, after the nose lifts, the car rockets forward, rewarding you with a muted but strong exhaust note.

Drive the Genesis V-8 sensibly, and the Hyundai will feel appropriately detached from the road, with adequate sound-deadening making for a quiet ride. Drive it like you stole it, and the Genesis can have some fun. The car completed our figure-eight course in On the track, testing director Kim Reynolds noted the car "can be danced around in the corners" and had brakes that felt strong.

Reynolds found the steering didn't have a lot of feel, but "at least doesn't exhibit any strange properties. So the Genesis' extra weight might diminish the value of the V-8, but the car's hp advantage over the standard V-6 might represent ample justification for lead-footed drivers to pay for the upgrade. Those who do will pay for it at the pump. All Genesis sedans use an eight-speed automatic, with all-wheel drive available on the V-6 model.

As you're waiting for the Genesis' When you're close enough with the key fob in your pocket, the trunk will open after three seconds. It's a great "watch this! Or the Hyundai Sonata. And the Kia Sedona minivan. We appreciated the sharp, color head-up display, 9. The three performance modes provided a noticeable change in transmission and steering feel from Eco to Sport as we rode on the V-8's standard inch wheels. Our car also had upgraded leather seats, power side bolsters, a panoramic sunroof, a 7-inch instrument cluster screen with a helpful speed limit indicator, and a steering wheel that vibrates when you veer from your lane.
