    Just as today's concept cars try to convey a brighter future, one where everything is electric and autonomous, the concepts of yesteryear tried to paint a technologically dazzling future that was just over the horizon. And when it came to futuristic concepts of the s, like GM's Firebird series of concepts , design was just as important as the technical achievements underneath the skin, even if the inspiration was based almost exclusively on aerospace themes. Presented at GM Motoramas , these concepts of the s used jet age design themes in an almost unrestrained manner, presenting a future that may seem like an episode of "The Jetsons" brought to life through today's eyes.

    But aside from the jet age design elements there was a practical purpose behind these concepts. The Firebird III that debuted in tested the feasibility of using gas turbine engines in passenger cars, representing the culmination of two previous efforts that explored the advantages and disadvantages of this powertrain.

    The Firebird I was a jet-styled concept and running prototype that explored high-speed abilities of this powertrain, at least until a GM executive was seriously injured in the prototype's crash at the Milford Proving Ground. The second Firebird concept, which debuted in , kept the jet-like shape but dialed down the high speed ambitions, previewing a family car with autonomous driving capabilities; the Firebird II was equipped with sensors that allowed it to automatically follow a series of wires implanted in the roadway, billed as the "Highway of the Future.

    The third Firebird concept debuted in , and sought to build upon the high-speed ability of the first model and the electronic feats of the second model. The world seems to be hell-bent going at least partially electric -- and fast.
