I just purchased a Dodge Power Wagon ambulance. She's been sitting for a long time, and has a beautiful patina. The truck currently has a Chevy 6 and Chevy 3-speed gearbox. I've never owned a Power Wagon and am researching them now to learn as much as I can. What I'd like to do is install a Cummins 4bt with the stock gearbox and divorced transfer case Anyone here done this with a Power Wagon?

Sponsored Links Remove Advertisements. Paul in NY https: Thanks for the heads up. I just pm'd him from the link Although, not sure if the link worked. I'm in the process of doing a similar swap, Paul is a good source of info, he's done three of these conversions now. When you say stock transmission do you mean the original PW trans or the current GM trans? Honestly I don't see the benefit of either as you'd still be limited to about 50 MPH.

If you're going to do all the work to swap in a 4BT, you might as well get a more modern OD trans too. It won't improve the top speed a lot without re-gearing the axles, but it will help. There are three different manual transmissions I know of that will fit between the cummins and the NP These guys specialize in restoring military vehicles and power wagons. They repower with Cummins engines and do some incredible restoration work. They have all kinds of custom parts like a custom radiator with intercooler.

I would doubt that any of their work would be considered cheap but few good things are. Wish someone liked me that good. If you want to have it done they don't get much better than M-Series, but his work does not come cheap.

He uses a Spicer a trans behind his engines, rebuit with a custom OD gear ratio. He's started using the newer 4. Which is a good point to make. Brakes being the biggest item.

Legacy Power Wagons is another option. Very expensive, and I can't speak to their quality but they tend to take the route of replacing the entire drivetrain with more modern parts. So it's mainly just the look you're keeping. I believe M-Series still offers the P pump 4bt as well. They get recon engines from Cummins. He's also using the QSB4. The one I saw that was 50 grand they had spent about 6 months on the bodywork alone.

Most show cars don't have better paint than that thing had. These things were designed as hd work trucks but have sort of become the icon of super pickups. He buys his engines straight from Cummins, so he can get any engine they'll sell him. He said the move to the 4. I figured he was getting his engines direct. I wouldn't think emissions would be an issue on a 50 plus year old vehicle. Smog control was't in vogue when these things were built.

One plus of the newer common rail engines is they produce quite a bit more power and run quieter. When you're dealing with trucks that have zero sound deadening that can be a plus.
