The transmission really does ruin an otherwise OK ride in the X. Additionally, features like Forward Collision Warning help to keep you safe and aware on the road. See All New Vehicles. I flicked the twist knob in the center console to sport right away and thought it made this admittedly slow soft-roader a little more fun to drive. And normal upshifts at faster speeds seemed quick enough.

Fiat X Trekking Plus AWD Review

What an exciting time to be alive and in the market for eminently practical transportation! The still-young compact crossover class is blossoming into a field full of fresh little utelettes, and each new offering is settling into its own corner of the market: The Fiat X, the most conventional model from the Italian automaker to be offered in the U. You can option it out in bunch of ways, but this one had a matte black finish on the dash.

Still, roundness abounds, from the seat design to the console. It would be a tight squeeze. Ride is about where I like it. I can shift the agricultural six-speed on our long-term Wrangler more smoothly. I can only guess that this offers some benefits for fuel economy, or at least fuel-economy testing. And, to be fair, I did return around 27 mpg during my weekend of mostly expressway driving. Flat stretches with the cruise control set to 76 mph seemed to do it.

With the big caveat that I typically give cars that make an effort to have a bit of style extra points -- plus my inexplicable fondness for Fiats and their goofy retro look -- this is my personal pick in a class of perfectly utilitarian, but generally rather boring, vehicles. This X skirts the line in between, with good proportions; luggage space is hampered, but the car does have enough space for four. The interior is cheap but utilitarian.

The two-knob radio is always appreciated, and I liked the matte finish on the glove box and other parts, too. Like Kozak said, it would look too much like a toy if all that interior stuff was also giallo. So, we part ways in a few areas. I flicked the twist knob in the center console to sport right away and thought it made this admittedly slow soft-roader a little more fun to drive.

The auto stick in the center was in the proper, up-is-downshift format, and I was going to say that FCA almost has this nine-speed figured out Keep it in sport mode, man! The first nine-speed I drove in the Chrysler S needed a lot of programming work, the next one a year later was a little better and this one seems to be ready for showtime. And normal upshifts at faster speeds seemed quick enough. Customer preferred package with Trekking Collection 5, including UConnect 6.

Graham Kozak - Graham Kozak drove a Packard sedan in high school because he wanted something that would be easy to find in a parking lot. He thinks all the things they're doing with fuel injection and seatbelts these days are pretty nifty too.
